The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth (Pages 63-82)

So you also must be ready.

“Therefore keep watch.”

The evening meal was in progress,

When he was gone, Jesus said, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” Then Jesus told them, “This very night you will all fall away on account of me.”

Then he returned to the disciples and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting?

Jesus replied, “Do what you came for, friend.”

Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied.

“I am he,” Jesus said. (And Judas the traitor was standing there with them.) When Jesus said, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground.

Again he asked them, “Who is it you want?”

“Jesus of Nazareth,” they said.

Jesus answered, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”

Then the men stepped forward, seized Jesus and arrested him.

With that, one of Jesus’ companions reached for his sword, drew it out and struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his ear. “Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.”

In that hour Jesus said to the crowd, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come out with swords and clubs to capture me? Every day I sat in the temple courts teaching, and you did not arrest me. Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

“Let’s not tear it,” they said to one another. “Let’s decide by lot who will get it.”

Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”

They laid Jesus there, and rolled a big stone in front of the entrance to the tomb and went away.
